ThePlanet has published some rotating testimonials that make monitoring this page for changes a little bit more complex.

To workaround the issue, create a changedetect account and then enter the following url as a web page monitoring candidate:

    http://www.theplanet.com/clearance/

Then under the changedetect options for the monitor you just created, enter a number in the page size field for this urlminder. Note that the page size filed is listed under Notification Triggers (Advanced Users). We used ’50′ (without the quotes) for the page size field. Now any changes less than 50 characters to theplanet’s clearance page are ignored.

No more false alarms and/or extraneous “this page has changed” messages.

Only relevant changes to theplanet’s clearance items will be detected. ThePlanet’s clearance items sell out fast, so this is a cool trick.

Those rotating testimonials on theplanet’s website (in the right navigation column) are longer than 50 characters, so changedetect is reporting false alarms.

What we needed to do to successfully monitor the dedicated server clearance page at thePlanet…

Instead of setting ChangeDetect’s page size field to 50 characters, we are now using a page size of 150 characters which allows changedetect to now report only relevant changes to the web page.

Note: You must create a login account at ChangeDetect for you to enter the page-size options so that this to works correctly.
